The Secret Ingredients of a Successful Salesperson with Tim Lesnick

July 23, 2026

Tim Lesnick, co-founder of Trova, recently joined Betsy Gardner on the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce’s B Student Podcast on Jan 29, 2025, to discuss what makes someone successful in sales.

Drawing on more than two decades in recruiting, staffing, and professional services, Tim explained that strong sales is not about pushing people toward a transaction.

It is about understanding what people need, building trust, asking better questions, and helping others solve meaningful problems.

Sales Starts with the Customer’s Problem

Tim traced his first sales lesson back to age seven, when he sold products as a Cub Scout.

His first approach was simply to open the product kit and ask a neighbor to buy something, but that did not work.

After talking with his parents, he returned with a more focused message about wrapping paper she would soon need for the holidays.

The experience taught him an important lesson: successful salespeople do not begin with what they want to sell. They begin by identifying a problem and connecting it to a useful solution.

Motivation Creates Action

According to Tim, successful salespeople usually have a strong internal reason for pursuing a goal.

He describes this as a “burning desire,” whether that means earning an opportunity, finding a job, growing a business, or achieving a personal goal.

That motivation creates the energy needed to take action, recover from rejection, and continue improving.

Natural ability may help, but long-term success also requires a clear reason to keep moving when the process becomes uncomfortable or uncertain.

Avoid “Commission Breath”

One of Tim’s most memorable phrases from the interview is “commission breath.”

He uses it to describe salespeople who want the transaction so badly that customers can sense their true motivation. Instead of listening, these sellers focus on their own outcome and make the conversation feel forced or transactional.

Tim believes a better approach is to sit beside the customer as a partner, understand the situation, and decide whether the service truly offers value.

That mindset helps create stronger relationships instead of one-time sales.

Build Relationship Credit

Tim also discussed the importance of earning “relationship credit.”

Trust develops over time through credibility, consistency, curiosity, and genuine interest in another person’s goals.

As that trust grows, a salesperson gains permission to ask more direct questions and have more honest conversations.

Relationship credit cannot be demanded or created through a script.

It develops when people see that you are willing to contribute value, share useful knowledge, and help them move forward without making every interaction about an immediate sale.

What Tim Looks for in Successful Salespeople

When evaluating sales talent, Tim looks for a combination of drive and the ability to communicate ideas effectively.

A driven person actively pursues goals, while a strong promoter can explain a point of view and bring others into the conversation.

He also sees value in a healthy level of impatience and a willingness to question established practices.

Those traits can motivate someone to improve a process instead of accepting the status quo, although they must be balanced with good judgment and an ability to work well with others.

Tactics Cannot Replace Authenticity

Sales techniques can help people organize conversations, respond to objections, and communicate more clearly, but Tim cautions against relying too heavily on tactics.

He shared a story about teaching one of his children a strategy for redirecting his brother’s attention from a toy.

The approach worked until the other child recognized what was happening.

The same is true in business: people eventually notice when they are being manipulated. Lasting success comes from understanding the customer, knowing the value you provide, and communicating honestly rather than searching for a clever way to control the outcome.

Self-Awareness Makes Salespeople More Credible

Tim considers self-awareness one of the most important qualities a salesperson can develop.

Effective sellers understand how they come across, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and notice when their words do not match their tone or body language.

They are also willing to acknowledge mistakes, redirect a conversation, or admit when they do not have an answer.

Rather than presenting a polished but artificial version of themselves, self-aware salespeople use honesty and appropriate vulnerability to create stronger, more believable connections.

Your Network Is Your Net Worth

Tim encourages business owners and salespeople to build relationships everywhere they go, not only during formal networking events.

He shared that several of his strongest business opportunities came through unexpected connections, including a hairdresser, a doctor’s office, and a friend of a friend he once helped.

These examples show why professional networks should be treated as living relationships rather than lists of contacts.

A person does not need to be a close friend to create an important opportunity; sometimes the most valuable introduction comes through someone one step removed.

Why Human Relationships Still Matter in an AI-Driven Market

Artificial intelligence may help salespeople identify leads, prepare materials, and complete routine work more efficiently, but Tim does not believe it replaces the human foundation of sales.

Buyers still need trust, context, empathy, and thoughtful problem-solving.

Technology can support the process, but it cannot fully recreate the credibility that develops when a person listens carefully, understands a customer’s situation, and shows a genuine commitment to helping.

The tools may change, but the value of strong relationships remains.

Throughout the conversation, Tim and Betsy challenge the outdated idea that selling is something only sales representatives do.

Sales skills influence how people present ideas, build support, develop partnerships, pursue career opportunities, and lead organizations.

Build a Stronger Sales Team

Finding an effective salesperson requires more than reviewing past quotas or matching keywords on a résumé.

Companies must evaluate how candidates listen, communicate, build trust, respond to rejection, and connect their work to the customer’s needs.
